After a record-breaking career, former Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper retires from Australian rugby with immediate effect and will not head to the Paris Olympics as part of the nation's rugby sevens side.

Former Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has announced his immediate retirement from Australian rugby.

"What a ride! My Olympic journey has come to an end, and with it, my Australian rugby career. To the Aussie Sevens team, I wish you all the best you've been an awesome, helpful, and talented group of athletes to be part of," Hooper said via Instagram.
