In addition to his work in journalism, Carlyon wrote six books and was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia As one of Australia's most respected journalists, he received both the Walkley Award in 1971 and 2004, and the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award in 1993.Australian War Memorial director Brendan Nelson praised Carlyon's work in the wake of his death."Perhaps his greatest contribution is his two tomes — Gallipoli and The Great War.
