First day of Parliament to honour 'brave and selfless' firefighters and volunteers

Politicians from both sides of the chamber will pay tribute to the sacrifice of firefighters and volunteers who faced this summer’s bushfire crisis when Federal Parliament returns this year.

The prime minister will move a motion of condolence on behalf of all Members of Parliament, which will recognise the service of first responders and others for their “incredible generosity” to people impacted by the fires. More than a third of voters surveyed “strongly disapproved” of Mr Morrison's approach, and 21 per cent disapproved, while 24 per cent backed his response.

On one visit to fire-affected communities in Cobargo, he was heckled and one firefighter refused to shake his hand. Tributes, condolences? Sounds a lot like thoughts and prayers... meaningless and will only make the pollies feel good, does nothing for anyone affected particularly the families of those who were doing something practical and made the ultimate sacrifice doing so.

We should all pay respects and honour the sacrifice of the firefighters. One wonders why though our pollies need to take a full day from sitting time to do so. Surely a combined statement and three minutes reflection would be more real and appropriate than droning speaches?

Politicians praise is worthless. Just pay them Scrooge.

Second day will probably be devoted to knifing them in the back while they continue to bravely and selflessly confront bushfires.

Bread and circuses.

They should honour the firefighters by enacting legislation to dramatically reduce carbon emissions and increase funding for and coordination of firefighters.
