The Herald's View: Revelations about the plight of two young boys in the care of the state in 2022 give us all reason to demand better

Few things challenge our self-belief in Australia being a modern egalitarian society affording a fair go to all than the neglect of children. As a society, we make available billions of dollars in taxpayer funds to provide care for vulnerable children to give them a chance to avoid a cycle of neglect, poverty and intergenerational disadvantage.

Sheedy put on record details of the plight of the boys, including: how they complained to their school principal of hunger pains and to their lawyer about not having enough food; how they were too cold to go to school because they did not have a winter uniform; how their care provider quoted $77,000 per month to care for them; and how their psychological welfare was suffering having experienced a police raid, separation from siblings and abuse in care since coming to the attention of...

Critics of the existing model highlight the oversight of a government handing over money to providers to care for the children.

Some Queensland coal mines to trade beyond 2050 net-zero targetIt has been revealed 12 coal mines across Queensland are expected to continue operating beyond the 2050 net-zero target. Internal state government reports reveal the Carmichael coal mine is expected to remain operational until 2071, while another two mines are expected to remain open until 2099, according to The Courier Mail. The revelations come after Resources Minister Madeleine King declared Australia will continue exporting coal and gas for 'as long as we need'. Coal accounts for 70 per cent of Queensland’s resources exports, amounting to nearly $72 billion. So we'll just send the coal to China to burn, and Australia keeps the 'net zero' tag? LOL. Excellent No surprise, the whole planet has been struggling to transition to renewables for 2 decades are emissions have actually increased. All we have is targets not met and broken promises, what are govt will do differently is still unknown. 🤔
