Halfway through the so-called “awards season” you’d think there would be a likely candidate for best picture at this year’s Oscars starting to surge ahead of the pack. That’s how it’s always gone for the almost century-long history of Hollywood’s highest film accolade.

But if you’re looking at the candidates and still scratching your head, you’re not alone. And you won’t be the first to say that this is going to be a year like no other. The curious thing is, it’s not because there are few options. It’s because the reverse is true: the 2022 Oscars has the widest field of contenders in years.

In January, it shifts wholly to Los Angeles, with the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, followed by the peer-voted awards nights of the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, Producers Guild and Directors Guild. The season ends in March with the Academy Awards. This year, the Golden Globes were sidelined after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – the group that votes for the winners – was hammered by reports of self-dealing, and industry scrutiny on the group’s lack of black members.

The Globes telecast was shelved by its broadcast partner NBC – “Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,” NBC said – but winners were announced in all of its categories. The rival event, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, has been delayed until March. But mid-way through awards season, the field is still unusually wide, and it’s still difficult to discern who will start pulling ahead of the pack.
