A-League club owners are set to gain full control over the competition's governance before next season with Football Federation Australia set to expedite the transfer of ownership within months

A-League club owners are set to gain full control over the competition's governance before next season with Football Federation Australia set to expedite the transfer of ownership within months.

The acceleration of the independence process is also set to relieve the FFA of a significant financial burden. Running the A-League could come with a heavy cost next year due to a reduction in broadcast revenue, potential restrictions on crowds and greater travel costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The A-League is set to be registered as a separate legal entity owned by the club owners. However, the exact terms of that entity are yet to be agreed upon by the FFA and club owners.

Senior club sources suggested they were seeking a full-ownership model, similar to MLS or the EPL, which will give them complete control over all matters, including expansion, foreign player quotas, club licensing and team locations. While FFA accepts the need for independence, sources involved in talks suggested it was seeking to retain a degree of control on the biggest issues.
