Feminist Legal Clinic evicted for posting anti-trans website links

Since 2017, the Feminist Legal Clinic has worked from shared office space in a City of Sydney-owned building in Glebe.The charity clinic, which offers legal advice for female victims of domestic violence, and support for women navigating the family court, was given the office rent-free under the City’s Accommodation Grants Program. The clinic also handles discrimination matters, including a current case of a woman accused of vilifying trans people.

But Equality Australia CEO Anna Brown said it was the responsibility of elected officials to ensure that publicly owned resources were used to support organisations that didn’t discriminate.“Efforts ... to wind back the hard-fought rights of transgender women have very real impacts on lives of trans and gender diverse members of our community, who face severe mental health challenges as the result of the marginalisation and discrimination they experience on a day-to-day basis.

The dispute between the feminist lawyers and the Clover Moore-helmed Council, known for its progressive stances and close links to the LGBTIQ community, highlights the fault line between some “old-school” feminists, labelled TERFS by their critics, and the trans community. Ms Kerr said the Council was alerted to complaints about the clinic’s website after Ms Kerr helped set up a February 2020 event at Sydney University lobbying for “Women’s Human Rights”.

JacquelineMaley I had no idea a commercial lease could be unilaterally terminated on such grounds? The lease must have expired reverted to a month to month lease. Even then, such grounds for termination are uncertain at best. My wife has just signed a commercial lease and there is no such term.
