The federal government is under pressure to justify its move to criminalise desperate Australians attempting to return home from COVID-ravaged India.

The Australian Human Rights Commission wants the government to prove that its decision to fine or jail Australians is"not discriminatory".Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, has described the move as"outrageous".

More than 9,000 Australians in India are registered as wanting to return, including 650 considered vulnerable. "The government must show that these measures are not discriminatory and the only suitable way of dealing with the threat to public health."

Handy_Capp Can be no justification for criminalizing our people...ever!!

Simply disgusting.

What is going on. Why aren't enough people outraged at the fascist Liberal government

AzucenaCaTo the Australian way ScottMorrisonMP australian

‘Under pressure’! Good! Total inhuman, embarrassing notion. In f***ing Australian!

Sickhunt

Pity the Feds didn’t apply the same standards to the Ruby Princess from entering our waters when they had an opportunity to show real leadership

phbarratt Never heard of such a crazy idea. So are Australians in India now thought of as asylum seekers? Perhaps NZ might take them in !

Sophiemcneill I am nominally a Liberal voter. This is NOT a government the I can vote for.

Its a very odd stance to take.

Good country security must be paramount coz those coming from India bring death to Australia .

Australian Values... it’s not those that we were been told ... right ?

While publicly preaching lately that he is doing God’s plan...

The criminals here are the Morrison government. This is outrageous.

I want to know why a war memorial and war games are worth funding but federal quarrantine isnt?

These leaders are not good politicians.

We would be over whelmed by COVID if borders not closed ?

Australia had over a year to build set up fit for purpose Quarantine facilities they could have done it in time to get “them Home By Christmas” ScottMorrisonMP GregHuntMP Morrison done Diddly Squat

Australia just told its citizens ... loud and clear: I WON’T HAVE YOUR BACK.

Time has come for Australia to send all available stocks of the Covid vaccine to India For God sake help India - don’t just give lip service Help them

If it were Scomo or one of his LNP mates, all would be fine; straight home, and quarantine exempt. But everyone else, crooks for wanting to come back home to the country of their birth.

Federal govt seeks & willingly accepts advice from a coterie of senior public service operatives. Pezullo and his hand picked cabal the principle architects of harsh policy since 2014 Dangerous and must be removed by Labor if we're to return to being a decent caring country.

The sad thing is that the LNP are not answerable to anyone for anything. People whinge, howl and scream for a while and then like magic, it all goes away. The cycle of corrupt insulting behaviour keeps repeating and nothing ever changes. The media are weak...

Where is the equity in how different countries, their covid case loads and government response?

The Feds thought it would be popular to exclude citizens stranded in India from coming home by criminalising their return. They thought that a tough line would be seen as preferable to tackling the repatriation problem. But they forgot one thing. If it were us we would want help

The Morrison Government has gone rogue They must assist Aussie’s to get home

Australia's Covid exiles: 30 Aussie cricket stars are stranded India 15th -30th of May - these cricket players might end up home in Oz... Cherry picking 🇦🇺 citizens is not fair! Please try and justify this ...

I wonder if this hard response from the ScottMorrisonMP LiberalAus & The_Nationals government stems from[my opinion] that they feel 'Threatened' by a growing number of Australians be they your classic white australian variety or a healthy blend of multicultural? Auspol

There’s no justification. Didn’t happen when US & UK were at their peaks racism

Or, Fed Govt can build purpose built quarantine facilities away from populated cities and support Australian citizens to return home safely.

Gee call me amnesiac. But I don't remember, when the virus was raging in the US during the most lethal days of Trumpian incompetence, any Aussie citizens in the US being told that they were forbidden by law from coming home and that they would be jailed for 5 years if they did.

This is how they justify it

Its because the Indians are not Pentecostal , simple as that ..

The federal government is under enormous pressure to justify the utterly unjustifiable in its move to criminalise desperate Australians attempting to return home from COVID-ravaged India & its flat out refusal to invest in a nationally rolled out network of quarantine facilities

This is in violation of human rights, which state that people have a right to return to their country of citizenship. I know that Australians are weirdly comfortable with trashing human rights whenever it suits, but these things are meant to be inalienable. This is immoral.

Can you read this? You want me to give up my freedoms of movement, association and expression for your security. If you're worried, why don't you participate in the vaccine trials or stay home?

Tasmania just gave this federal government their approval unfortunately 😢 Scott Morrison is preferred pm? I guess he does have someone on his side. Because we are fkd

‘Extraordinary action’: Labor says government must justify India ban“The government’s got to justify how it is that the figures from India are similar to what they’ve been in the past from the UK and the US, but we haven’t seen these sort of measures” Auspol No one believes the numbers from India. Agree with Albo here. UK and US were much worse and also had similar predictions of 10x more cases than reported. What gives? Labor is naive and stupid

Lawyers prepare to challenge legality of 'un-Australian' India travel banAssistant Multicultural Affairs Minister Jason Wood says most Australians support the federal government's controversial India travel ban, as lawyers prepare to challenge its legality in court. 'voters have been largely supportive of hard-line border policies'. Here's an exercise, name one human rights abuse against a minority group that doesn't have widespread public support. By the time this gets to court and a ruling is made. The government would have lifted the ban. I would like to see the whole travel ban challenged. It wont stand up Yes, there should be better quarantine facilities. No, people should not have been granted exemptions to attend weddings and funerals. Yes, it’s generally wrong to block citizens from returning home. But the immediate threat is the surge in Covid cases and variants.

Australian man dies after contracting COVID-19 in India, authorities confirmAn Australian permanent resident has died after contracting COVID-19 in India, as the pandemic continues to devastate the subcontinent. Seems there is at least one case in Lebanon that no one is reporting of a man who was desperately trying to return and could not too. Congratulations Scott The man is a permanent resident, not an Australian citizen. This is poor, factually incorrect agenda driven reporting.
