Calculating the road toll is extraordinarily complicated, according to Queensland police as loved ones say the confusion is compounding their grief.

"I prefer the term 'road fatalities' because it is not a price we pay for using the road," she said."In many ways it is a poor measure of the safety performance of our road system," she said.

Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner, Mike Keating, from road policing command is responsible for the count and said it was"extraordinarily complicated" which was why police monitored it so closely. He said if a death was caused by a deliberate act of self-harm it would be ruled out of scope along with anyone else who died in the crash.
