Exclusive: The Morrison government will expand healthcare operations at the Christmas Island Detention Centre to cater for more than 500 refugees and asylum seekers auspol | michaelkoziol

The Morrison government will dramatically expand healthcare operations at the Christmas Island Detention Centre to cater for more than 500 refugees and asylum seekers, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison insisting all single males brought to Australia under the medical transfer legislation will be sent to the remote island.

"What Labor has put in place is a system that will allow large numbers of people to game the system to find a way to get themselves on to the Australian mainland to put their hooks into the Australian legal system," Mr Morrison said. The government has identified 57 people it says are of questionable character who would be eligible for a transfer to Australia because they have only been accused of illicit activity rather than convicted. But it also says there may be more people of concerning character among the 1000 people still in PNG and Nauru.Mr Morrison said it would be a "good thing" if few people ended up being sent to Christmas Island, despite the massive cost of the reopening.

Mr Shorten accused Mr Morrison of "frolicking" around Christmas Island and said the 5000 kilometre journey from Canberra - which required an overnight stop in Broome - was a waste of money. Inspecting the detention centre’s facilities on Wednesday, Mr Morrison said the challenges faced by staff this time around would be different because they are dealing with people whose asylum status has been resolved rather than those who are seeking a refugee determination.

michaelkoziol This is total madness! There are no direct flights to CI from MI & N. So why aren't the AS being taken directly to a large hospital on the mainland? People on CI have to fly out for complex medical care & obstetrics, it isn't set up for anything but the most basic treatment!

michaelkoziol What a terrible waste of our money. It could have been used here to upgrade hospitals with a lasting value. No votes in this stupid act.

michaelkoziol the medical contract would be worth $100s mils just to pamper 500refugees While at d hosp on d mainland patients r queuing at d corridors waiting for beds ER wait is 4hrs It is so farcical that LNP can dream up

Lettuce on Christmas Island can cost $15, but an ambitious farmer is changing thatPrevious attempts to grow food on a large scale on Christmas Island, where fresh food is an expensive luxury, have failed. But now an ambitious farmer is fighting the odds, and succeeding. . Considering how many people (stock brokers, bankers, shareholders) earn money without contributing to the wellbeing of people or environment, far more support and attention needs to be given to local farmers who provide people with fresh and healthy produce. .

Apathy and disillusionment on Christmas Island as residents prepare for federal electionThey have WA laws, are governed from Canberra, and vote in the NT — and it's left Christmas Island residents feeling apathetic and frustrated. A very disillusioned article, actually! I feel for what is clearly a ridiculous position for Christmas Islanders, but the article dissolves quickly into irrelevant Colonial mush and furvor, thank you ABC! I very much doubt any will be handing in their AUS Passports ajy time soon! It appears that these people have been forgotten. They don't have much of a voice & were not consulted about re opening the detention centre either. 🌴 Just hand it to Indonesia and fix the problem of boat smuggling and the need to do turn backs. What strategic purpose does it serve so close to Indonesia, given Australia took it over from Singapore a while back. Does Australia really need Christmas Island?
