The Greens have proposed to allow Hong Kongers currently living in Australia on temporary visas to stay permanently. The PM labelled the idea 'premature'. But there are two main reasons an exodus from Hong Kong could be great for Australia. | OPINION

A bipartisan group, likely dozens strong, to give voice and force to the interests of pro-democracy Hong Kongers, will fly in the face of Beijing's views. This may be uncomfortable for the Australian government. But it demonstrates the depth of authentic sympathy for the pro-liberty protesters and a growing Australian wariness of the Chinese Communist Party's repressive impulses.

Second is that the Hong Kongers seeking to leave are likely to be people who value liberty. They are likely to want to live in a country where liberty is protected. And that means they are not likely to be supporters of the Chinese Communist Party and its system of infiltration.

So these are the reasons that Australia could gain from a wave of Hong Kong immigrants. But the question that the government will ask is why Australia need do anything more to attract them? It's true that Australia is the most favoured destination already. Last year 2400 Hong Kong residents moved to Australia, 1600 to the US and 1100 to Canada, according to statistics from the Hong Kong government. But while this is true, it might not be relevant.reports migration agencies saying that, among Hong Kongers seeking to leave now, the most popular destination is Singapore followed by Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia. And the numbers are surging.

Protesters call on Donald Trump to help 'liberate' Hong KongHong Kong police have fired tear gas on protesters, who waved US flags and sang the Star Spangled Banner as they called on US President Donald Trump to 'liberate' the city. So the war with China will begin with us rescuing Hong Kong? I feel for them ... even more so as they call upon the arguably most incapable US president the world has ever seen. 'Please liberate HK' - if they told Trump / Bolton that there is oil under the city, they would be in faster than a rat up a drain pipe.
