The researchers stressed their model did not factor in a likely reduction in transmission rates from testing, contact tracing and isolation of potential or suspected cases. They also did not account for the impact of social distancing on public transport or in parks, or the mandatory use of personal protective equipment like masks.

"The lifting of interventions has to be closely monitored and compensated for by other measures of surveillance," Dr Michaela Vollmer, another author, said. The researchers also said the R0 rate - the term for measuring how many people one infected person can make sick - had dropped in all regions of Italy.
