The aged care royal commission says there's an 'over-reliance' on chemical restraints in aged care. What are the alternatives?

— such as antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs.

High rates of antipsychotic prescribing in aged care have been known about for many years. An Australian study, conducted last year, found one in five aged care residents were being given. These medications are commonly used to manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia — things like agitation and aggression.

"We found that massage therapy or massage therapy combined with music therapy and multidisciplinary care were some of the most effective interventions," said Dr Jennifer Watt, the study's lead author and a geriatrician at St Michael's Hospital, Toronto.

Look after yr own elderly

Yes but, raise the standards & this blows out operational costs. It requires staff with higher levels of competency & training which raises salaries, if you can even find enough people if that calibre. This will destroy most of the smaller operators so consolidation is required.

There R a number of alternatives which would include better diagnosis/treatment of chronic pain in the elderly, more staff to provide gentler/slower care, better training of staff in the de-escalation of behaviours, rotation of staff out of dementia units etc. It all cost money.

Marijuana OIL?

Safer more uplifting drugs like cannabis

Aged care facilities are always at full capacity but under staffed, many of whom are under qualified. There are large numbers with dementia who continually wander, risking injury to themselves and other patients. It’s a nightmare. Restraints are a symptom, profit is the cause.

Ritalin? Shit. Sorry. Wrong demographic.

Establish staff:client ratios that enable staff to engage with and support those in our care and show respect for the value-driven workforce, stop exploiting us for the gain of the profit-driven, take a look at how these places are managed!!!
