Double amputee Alex Zanardi in 'serious' condition after handbike crash

Tributes have poured in for Italian race car champion-turned-Paralympic gold medallist Alex Zanardi after he crashed his handbike into a truck during a race in Italy.Alex Zanardi crashed his handbike in Italy on Friday during a race and is in a "serious but stable" conditionZanardi lost both his legs in a CART crash in 2001 and became a four-time Paralympic gold medallist

"The condition of Alex Zanardi is serious but stable," Zanardi's surgeon at the Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital in Siena, Dr Giuseppe Olivieri said. Sabino Scolletta, director of the hospital's intensive care unit, said, "the situation is clearly critical in terms of brain damage."Zanardi, a two-time CART championship winner and former F1 driver, is an inspirational figure after he recovered from horrific injuries during a race to return to motorsport and go on to compete in the Paralympics.
