A Doomadgee resident wants to bring back community-led policing to help curb high crime rates. An Aboriginal organisation will direct federal government funding towards developing the program in cooperation with police.
The community experienced its highest crime rate on record last year, with reported assaults climbing every year since 2020, Queensland Police Service data shows.Gangalidda man Barry Walden, who chairs the community-controlled organisation Gunawuna Jungai, said in the past there weren't enough "heads turning" when solutions to crime issues were presented to government services by the community.
Similar initiatives operate across the country, with the Queensland Police Service aiming to expand its formal community policing program, the Protective Services Group scheme, from Palm Island and Yarrabah to other Aboriginal communities across the state. "We can work with the justice groups, we can work with the police around building us a better, a safer and a more sustainable community," he said.Mr Walden said engaging families was key to combating youth crime in remote communities.
