Donations 'a price paid for influence', former NSW Labor boss admits at ICAC | MWhitbourn Rabe9

Former NSW Labor boss Jamie Clements has told a corruption inquiry that political donations were the price controversial billionaire Huang Xiangmo paid for influence, including access to senior figures in the party.

Mr Clements does not dispute that he met with Mr Huang in his Sussex Street office on April 7, 2015, two days before Labor banked a $100,000 cash donation. But he said the purpose of the appointment was for Mr Huang to request a private dinner with then federal Labor leader Bill Shorten and he was not given a bag of cash.

ICAC Chief Commissioner Peter Hall, QC, asked Mr Clements if he was "saying that a big donor to the political party, by virtue of the donation, is perceived by you as now having influence" including the ability to request meetings with senior party figures."So that's, in your mind anyway, one of the benefits to ... a generous donor. It's a price paid for influence?" Mr Hall asked.
