They can upgrade to premium seats with more space. With only limited scope to increase comfort while also keeping costs low, airlines should try to improve the flying experience by making it more egalitarian.

I doubt people realise that they are trading smaller seats for cheaper flights. Given pricing on flights airlines don't want you to take, I think airlines couldn't care less
Indeed! You want comfort - pay for it. The seat reclines? I’m using it. If everyone reclines no one looses any space except the last row which byw is cheaper. You can also choose your airline. I no longer fly Jetstar on distances longer than 2 hrs.
