BREAKING: A Chinese doctor who tried to issue a warning about the deadly coronavirus has died, Chinese media reports

Dr Li Wenliang, who worked as an ophthalmologist at the Wuhan Central Hospital, died after contracting the novel 2019-nCoV virus, Chinese media say.

Shortly after, Xinhua News Agency issued a warning to the public: “The police call on all netizens to not fabricate rumours, not spread rumours, not believe rumours”. Experts said China’s authoritarian culture had allowed the crisis to take hold.
