Opponents want to protect thousands of trees and vegetation along the 12½-kilometre highway duplication route. “We’ve run an exhaustive process and we’re on the record as saying that the trees that should be saved, are being saved,” Mr Mifsud said. “That’s 13 trees of tangible and intangible cultural heritage that we have worked to save.”

But this assessment was strongly contested by protesters and land owners on the ground, who said the tree that was cut down on Monday was widely referred to as the directions tree.

AdamBandt That’s Victoria Labor and the Greens for you. Andrews and Bandt, are responsible, must be held accountable for this desecration.

AdamBandt 😠

It’s about time it was removed. Send the bill for the delays to the feral activists.

AdamBandt Yes, the Cth of Oz has not acquired the development area. It looks to be part of gazetted road reserve & portions of surrounding properties which been taken by Crown in right of Victoria. A disappointing outcome for traditional owners who opposed the current development proposal.

AdamBandt This is just another bloody Juukan Gorge. Is anyone learning anything?

Story says that the government agreed to protect 22 trees but that the aboriginals say only 13 trees are saved. There's also no basis presented for preserving thousands. What is this protest really about? Extorting money from government?

What happens when these culturally significant trees get struck by lightning or otherwise die?

What a disgrace cutting down that tree.

😢

So they can build another disgusting highway with hideous steel structures posing as ‘artistic design’ 😡

Didn’t the State Government remove the tree?
