Bushfire survivor Brett Hawkins never expected to find his home and one tree left unscathed among total devastation on the NSW Far South Coast.

When Brett Hawkins returned to his remote property in Upper Brogo, north of Bega, after the 2019 New Year's Eve bushfires, he never expected to find his home and one tree left unscathed among total devastation. The mudbrick home of Brett Hawkins and Wendy Wolff survived the summer bushfires alongside a mulberry treeThe bushfire survivors were given a new purpose to stay on the property

Bushfire survivors Wendy Wolff and Brett Hawkins under their green Mulberry tree in front of their mudbrick house. Mr Hawkins believed that by heavily watering the tree, combined with luck regarding which direction the fires came, the full heat of the bushfires was shifted."When the fireball encountered the mulberry tree, which is twice the size of the house, I think there was a deflection upwards of the heat.

He said pine trees have branches right to the ground which collect dead leaves — a problematic tree in a bushfire.

Trees Rock!

LukeWhito is there anything this marvelous tree can't do?

Sorry the tree may have saved it’s self the fact there is bare ground, low green vegetation and fire resistant mud brick are the factors that saved this house. The fire went all around the tree is on one side only. Good example of doing all the right things

thediggersclub had an article this year by Peter Marshall about how deciduous trees saved his home. We need to look at planting more cool shade trees and not flaming natives in suburbs and towns all the time.

🌳😊

There are many tree that are native that act as fire breaks. I believe Lilly Pilly is one.

This can be part of the governments new climate change policy. 😏

I expect many mulberry trees will be bought. Sacrifices were made to keep it healthy. An interesting story. Thank you. Xx

The Australian version of Winterfell
