An intellectually disabled man on death row was handed a form and asked to choose his execution method. But he couldn’t even read it.

Matthew Reeves, 44, who is awaiting execution at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, was scheduled to die on January 27.

The inmate, who has an IQ in the 60s and reads at a Grade 1 level, did not fill out a form that offered him death by nitrogen hypoxia. When Reeves was handed the form, he was not given any assistance reading it and, as such, did not fill it out. It meant authorities sought his execution by lethal injection.He earlier tried to have the death penalty decision overturned by claiming he is intellectually disabled but Alabama’s courts did not rule in his favour.Matthew Reeves is to be executed for a murder he committed as a teenager.Court documents from Reeves’ trial reveal the grisly details of the crime that put him on death row.
