EXCLUSIVE: Department waters down animal welfare conditions to allow live exports to resume in May auspol

Live exports to the Middle East are set to resume in the hottest months of the year after the Department of Agriculture weakened new animal welfare conditions following representations from the exporters' industry group.

Draft advice released in December last year recommended what is known as the wet bulb temperature on board ships should not exceed 28 degrees, a restriction which would have all but ended the entire live sheep trade.Independent observer records of voyages last May show temperatures reaching 34 degrees.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud commissioned Dr Michael McCarthy to review animal welfare standards on board ships last year in response to. In the footage, sheep can be seen visibly panting as they suffer the effects of heat stress. A spokesman for the department said the cap of 28 degrees was "not an absolute number" and said there was "little evidence" of sheep suffering last May, citing independent observer reports.

Reading this bullshit from the Dept. of Agriculture and the Aust. Live Exporters Council should make anyone who cares about animal welfare very angry. Little To Be Proud Of has obviously sided with this mob and the outcome will be devastating. This vile trade must be phased out.

This makes me angry, stop live exports NOW.
