After a turbulent preseason, the Demons have been presented with their first significant in-season hurdles with Steven May nursing suspected broken ribs and Jake Lever injuring his knee.

Melbourne’s impressive victory over Hawthorn may have come at a hefty price with injuries to defensive pillars Steven May and Jake Lever souring a day out for Bayley Fritsch.

Lever and May are central figures to the Demons’ defence, which, along with their powerhouse midfield, has been a cornerstone of their success under Simon Goodwin in the past three seasons. Lever did not appear confident in his knee during lengthy discussions with training staff in the third quarter as they assessed whether he could return to the field. With his knee lightly bandaged, Lever was unconvincing as he completed a few run-throughs at only a gentle pace. He headed back into the rooms to have more tape applied only to have it taken off and re-bandaged. The line was eventually put through his name in the final term.

Their win was built on their dominance at the stoppages, where midfield bulls Christian Petracca, Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver were too strong for the Hawks’ inexperienced on-ball brigade.
