Changes to tax cuts are unlikely in the October budget, giving the government more time to make the case, starting by highlighting surging defence spending.

The government will highlight mounting pressures to ramp up defence spending amid a deteriorating strategic environment.

Asked several times if Labor might shift in the future, Mr Albanese deflected by saying “our position hasn’t changed” and noted the public wasn’t particularly engaged in the debate. “Obviously there is a conversation going on in the community ... but right now this government is not planning any changes,” she said in pre-recorded comments that aired on Sky News on Sunday.who had supported Mr Albanese if Labor failed to honour the tax cuts.

As part of softening up the public to pare back the stage three tax cuts for high-income earners, Dr Chalmers has warned the five “essential or unavoidable” spending areas – debt servicing, aged care, hospitals, defence and National Disability Insurance Scheme – are all now making bigger demands on the federal budget.

“We face the most challenging circumstances since the Second World War, compounded by the fact that the economy is facing serious pressures – and reaching record spending within Defence as a per cent of GDP means we need to be more responsible about the way in which we manage,” Mr Marles said.

Albanese prepares to break his first promise: Axe tax cuts for the richThe stage three tax cuts aren’t to do with now. They were legislated years ago and are factored into every projection by credit rating agencies and institutional investors. And they don’t take effect for another 20 months, writes Peter Hartcher | OPINION It’s not tax cuts for the rich. 🤦‍♂️ The actual story isn't wage earners taxes and shuffling the deckchairs on that one. It's the windfall taxes on their war profits, that the foreign owned multinationals aren't paying. As politicians & high incomes complain they want, no demand their tax cuts These people seem to forget its 2022 where families struggle with cost of living crisis. Govt reminds us every day how tough it is, really. AlboMP JEChalmers abcnews dailytelegraph Politics_SMHAGE

Albanese prepares to break his first promise: Axe tax cuts for the richThe prime minister and his treasurer are planning how to salvage tax cuts for low and middle-income Australians, but to renege on their promise to the highest earners. High income earners are only a small portion of the rich. Most of the genuinely wealthy in our society have low absolute taxable incomes. The balance have low incomes relative to their vast wealth. Thoughts about an inheritance tax in Australia? God you guys are sad. Most would call it responsible economic management as opposed to economic vandalism if AlboMP went with LNP's high income tax cuts.
