Defence is not doing enough to address suicides, according to the Australian Defence Force Chief, who has told told the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide the ADF has inconsistent data on such deaths among its members.

The inquiry heard of inconsistencies in the way defence and veteran suicides were recorded and reported to the ADF

The royal commission, which is holding hearings in Townsville this week, has so far heard from the Commander of the 3rd Brigade and two former ministers.General Campbell admitted Defence "was not getting it right" when it came addressing suicide. In his written submission, General Campbell said he became aware of suicides among the veteran community through "ad hoc and inconsistent mechanisms".

"If a person declines to engage with ESOs and is not registered with the Department of Veterans Affairs, then it will be an after-the-event awareness, if at all, at this stage," he said. The commission also heard there was conflicting data on the number of permanent ADF members who had died by suicide since 2000.

What do defence members need to do to get defence leaders to act ? Hundreds fight internal battles for basic justice and are traumatised - many ending their lives.

No action in 10 years since this brave soldier risked his own career and personal well-being to speak out - shameful Angus Campbell ! Defence force fails abuse victims says officer

This is offensive - 10 years ago they knew that had major problems with culture and abuse and failed complaint management systems - read the reports of the Defence abuse taskforce . But nothing has changed as they don’t care . They need to be held to account

A mental health programme is required across defense. Not treated as a side project but as core to the structure and functioning of defence. That would mean carefully designed and coordinated projects across defense, with clear objectives and measure, tied to officer performance

The officers don’t care it’s all about their collective careers. I’ve had officers tell me bold faced lies when the truth doesn’t fit their narrative.

Worthwhile mentioning that Defence members no longer get a pension now. Having a pension after serving a minimum time bracket would help mitigate this. By providing additional support to ex soldiers who may find it harder adjusting to civilian life.
