The US has inked a new pact with Pacific leaders as part of an unprecedented summit designed to step up its efforts in the region and curtail China’s growing influence | FarrahTomazin

: The US has inked a new pact with Pacific leaders as part of an unprecedented summit designed to step up its efforts in the region and curtail China’s growing influence.

President Joe Biden will also designate Frankie Reed, a former Ambassador to Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga, and Nauru as the first-ever US Envoy to the Pacific Islands Forum, while the Solomon Islands will get additional support to spur tourism investment and jobs. Secretary of State Antony Blinken greets dignitaries from Pacific nations during the US-Pacific Island Country Summit at the State Department in Washington.“What I hope you take away from these engagements is that the United States shares your vision, and we are committed to help realise it,” Blinken told the gathering.

On Wednesday, however, the Solomon Islands was one of about a dozen Pacific nations to take part in the summit, alongside nations such as Fiji, Palau, Tonga, Samoa and New Caledonia. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, right, locks arms with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Honiara, Solomon Islands on May 26, 2022.Asked later to confirm that the Solomon Islands had agreed to the declaration, State Department spokesman Ned Price declined to answer directly, other than to say: “I will, for now, so as not to spoil some of the surprise for tomorrow, just say that we’ve been in a position to make tremendous progress.

One senior administration official admitted this week that “sometimes in that Indo-Pacific formulation, the region that gets short shrift is the Pacific.”

FarrahTomazin its amazing how an extra few billion dollars can be so persuasive.......

FarrahTomazin Soooo many summits of late, makes you think something is in the works and people are getting there orders. The UN general assembly, Queens Funeral and now this. Hmmmmm

FarrahTomazin Can you trust the rich and powerful White Americans given their atrocities and on discrimination on Americans of Colour? Or are they colourblind to us in the Indo-Pacific?

It’s the first Pacific Island summit that will be hosted by the United States. “I think any engagement with our region needs to be because of the relationship between that country and the Pacific,” Ms Ardern said. Cut from the same cloth. I wonder if the Chinese are going to show up as well? Like allowing China to buy up the south pacific?
