The Herald's View: It is shocking that the rate of deaths in custody is still rising rather than falling, more than 31 years after the landmark Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody

and expressed sympathy for the families of the dead who are often left feeling powerless.

Indigenous people are still 10 times more likely to die in custody than the general population. Indigenous people made up 37.2 per cent of all deaths in custody. a 22-year-old Gomeroi man, who disappeared into the flood-swollen Namoi River near Moree after he was followed by police. While it is important to improve the conditions for Indigenous people when they deal with police and when they are in prison, the main cause of the high death rate is that Indigenous people are much more likely than the general population to be imprisoned and to come into contact with police. This is the nub of the problem.

Probably because their rate of crime is increasing?

The rate of indigenous deaths has fallen so much that an indigenous prisoner is less likely to die than any other race. Of course this fact does not suit the race baiting agenda of SMH.

These articles never go into details, for obvious reasons. Of the 12 who died in prison, 7 were by natural causes and 3 by suicide, consistent with the statistics of the non indigenous prison popn. The best way to reduce this is for indigenous people to stop committing crimes.

As reported by media. Rampant crime in remote areas. Repeat and serious offenders resulting in gaol time. Equals higher rates of incarceration.

Typical SMH crap! Only ever tell half the story

Greater population. Why wouldnt it be rising? Also failed to mention any comparison to non Aboriginal people and the fact that almost all the deaths are natural causes or self inflicted. STOP stiring racial division with half truths and poor reporting.

Perhaps we should ask; why are these folk in custody?
