Dangerous winds lashing New South Wales have caused wild scenes in Sydney's north west where a massive gumtree was brought down, in the middle of a busy highway.

One woman was seriously injured when the tree crushed several cars on the Hume Highway at Warwick Farm. Three men were also treated for minor injuries. A severe weather warning remains in place for dangerous winds in parts of New South Wales including Sydney, the Illawarra, Hunter region and mid north coast.
