A cruise ship that left Brisbane on Sunday for a seven-day Pacific tour has turned back in an effort to avoid a tropical cyclone in the Coral Sea.
In a letter to guests delivered on Wednesday morning, Captain Carmelo Marino said: “Regrettably, given the forecasted path of the storm, we will not be able to deliver our planned South Pacific itinerary.“In the meantime, our team is attempting to secure a visit to Moreton Island for Friday .” The Le Laperouse, which departed Auckland last week and was scheduled to reach Cairns by Friday, was travelling through the Coral Sea on Wednesday near Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle, several hundred metres off the coast of Mackay.The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted Gabrielle, which was a category 1 early on Wednesday afternoon and sitting about 730 kilometres north-east of Mackay, could reach category 3 by Thursday.
