New Zealand Police seized 3.2 tonnes of cocaine, estimated to be worth around half a billion dollars, floating in the Pacific Ocean, potentially heading to Australia.

More than 3 tonnes of cocaine worth an estimated $NZ500 million have been seized in the Pacific Ocean as part of a New Zealand Police, Customs and Defence Force operation.

The amount would supply New Zealand for 30 years and Australia for one year, he said without elaborating. No arrests have been made and police were working with international partners to further their enquiries.NZ Police/NZDF/Stuff The Five Eyes law enforcement group – made up of New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom – was among the international partners who assisted with Operation Hydros, Coster said.

The massive scale of the seizure proved New Zealand was not exempt from drug smuggling efforts from major organised crime groups, he said.
