Crowdfunding campaigns for the victims of the floods in NSW and Queensland have raised more than $12.5 million so far, rivalling direct fundraising appeals by established charities | niltiac

Crowdfunding campaigns for the victims of the floods in NSW and Queensland have raised more than $12.5 million so far, rivalling direct fundraising appeals by established charities.

“The most common scenario is people stepping up and fundraising for somebody else,” Ms Britton said. “It tends to be people very close to those who have lost their homes and they’re stepping up as an act of solidarity.” Mr Taia said government assistance and insurance payouts took time, while fundraising sites like MyCause could release the money relatively quickly.Resilience NSW director of partnerships and engagement Kylie Bryden Smith said the big charities and the government co-ordinated their efforts to ensure there was no double-up.

She suggested using sites such as Givit, which is taking pledges of donations of time, money and goods, and working with the Queensland and NSW governments to ensure help is directed where it is needed. “People realise you have to jump through so many hoops and so much red tape to access government money or to access help through [charities],” Ms Lloyd said.

“As a charity, we do really rely on trust and we can gain that trust by being really open and transparent and consistent in our reporting of what we do,” Ms Byrne said.
