There is now a risk that over half of all the aged care homes in Australia could have outbreaks of COVID-19 by the end of the week, according to the peak body that represents Australia's aged care providers.

But during the COVID-19 pandemic visits have been rare, and now her mother's home is one of more than 1,000 around the country dealing with an outbreak of the virus.We've been very upset as a family because during the entire time it's been very difficult to get vaccinations for Mum," she told the ABC's AM program.

Professor Kathy Eagar, the director of the Australian Health Services Research Institute, believes all aged care residents should have had the chance to get boosted before Christmas. The Commonwealth's vaccine booster program has reached 75 per cent of facilities, but Professor Eagar believes it is too little, too late.
