The NSW Chief Economist has done calculations on what the state’s lockdown has cost – but won’t say it publicly, arguing it’s a secret.

NSW Chief Economist Stephen Walters told a parliamentary inquiry he had provided a calculation of the cost to the government, but said he wasn’t able to state that figure publicly because it was “cabinet in confidence”.NSW has been under tough restrictions for nearly 14 weeks. It prompted committee chair and Greens MP David Shoebridge to ask: “You can't tell me it’s a government secret, what the actual cost to the NSW economy has been – you’re not seriously telling me that’s a government secret?”Mr Walters said that Treasurer Dominic Perrottet had previously indicated the weekly cost of the lockdown was $1.3 billion. At the weekend, the Sydney lockdown will enter its 14th week, meaning the accumulated cost could already be as high as $16.9 billion.

We are getting sick of these 'secrets'... you work for us... or is the money derived from stolen Iraqi antiquities, stolen Syrian oil, stolen African diamonds

Didn't Aunty G a NSW presser a couple of weeks ago say, '..we are the most transparent state...', hypocrites.

Because they want to hide their failures.

Why should it be secret? Why should the cost of this massively important and expensive government policy be hidden from the people of the state?

We won't that information until Gladys is voted out

Voter's ballots are secret, not the financial status of the voter's govt.

Billions at the very least I would say. Big Billions. We will be paying for it for years but it’s better than letting thousands of people die. That’s what it boils down to. Just let it run before vaccination targets? How much is a life worth? It’s a pandemic, it has to be done.

NSW is not immune from anti-vax tensions rampaging in VictoriaThe Herald's View: The riots in Victoria could easily spread to NSW. If they do, the government should take firm steps in the interest of community health NSW is at 83% first dose vaccination, likely will reach 90%+. There’s no need for any further vaccination mandates, which means it’s very unlikely we’d see similar scenes as Melbourne. On top of this we have restrictions easing in a few weeks. World record days in lockdown. Shocking governance since day 1 of the pandemic with hotel quarantine fails and 6 lockdowns. Then they have the gonads to blame the people for the position we find ourselves in. No wonder they have snapped. Think NSW will avoid these scenes 🤞🏻

COVID-positive truck driver from NSW sparks virus concern in WA and SAA truck driver who travelled through both South Australia and Western Australia has sparked a COVID-19 scare after testing positive for the virus upon his return to New South Wales. If we can't get transport workers vaccinated how can we stop Covid spreading? NSW is a Covid disaster zone. Something needs to be done about all these infected truck drivers. If vaccines should be mandated in any industry, its this. If they are & so many are still getting infected, it doesn't bode well for our future & makes a mockery of vaxx passports
