Cost of coronavirus is 'too early' to tell: Alan Joyce

Alan Joyce says it is too early to tell how many millions of dollars Qantas will lose in the wake of the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Fronting media at the opening of the airline’s new pilot academy in regional Queensland, the Qantas chief executive said he would use the effect of the SARS pandemic as a benchmark. Alan Joyce visited Qantas’ new pilot school at Toowoomba with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and State Development Minister Cameron Dick.“It impacted us by $55 million back in 2003 and lasted around six to eight months,” Mr Joyce said.Advertisement

Investment bank UBS noted that during the SARS pandemic, during which Qantas international traffic fell 11 per cent and domestic load factors dropped 4 per cent, the airline placed a freeze on discretionary expenses, incentivised staff to take leave and cut its capital expenditure. Mr Joyce said a drop in fuel prices would help to soften the blow to the bottom line, as shares fell by about 5.3 per cent on Monday.

People come first, profits second you greedy CEO.

Joyce you shit me, money over public safety - you are not worthy of a CEO.

'Freaky dreams?' Lance Weiler asked. 'After I went through the windshield in a head-on collision w/ a garbage truck? I would say my dreams were less freaky than they are lucid. Now you say my time is up? Pay on the way out? What kind of psychiatrist are you? Not a very good one.'
