A leading Australian epidemiologist has explained why young people keep getting COVID-19 as the world’s youth have been blamed for fuelling the spread.

People aged between 20 and 29 account for the largest number of coronavirus cases and the highest rate of infection in Australia, according to the Department of Health.show there’s a number of reasons for that.

“So we are seeing lots of spread in families and that will bring the average age down because we see children and young people infected in that environment as well.” This week, WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan pleaded with young people to act responsibly after the number of infections among young people jumped in a number of countries. In NSW, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state was on a “knife edge” this week and asked young people to check their behaviour.

UK police have also been forced to shut down illegal parties and warn people to maintain their distance on the hottest day of the year on Friday. Beachgoers pack the beach in Brighton, on the south coast of England this week. Picture: Glyn Kirk/AFPAustralian National University Professor of Infectious Diseases Peter Collignon said the challenge is that while young people are more likely to be infected, they’re less likely to get very sick, leading to complacency.

Victorians to pay for COVID-19 ‘in dollar terms or funerals’ | Sky News AustraliaPremier Daniel Andrews has refused to attach a cost to Victoria’s lockdowns but says the price will be paid “whether it be in dollar terms or in funerals”.\n\n“I’m not going to be trying to put a price tag on this, this is what we have to do,” Mr Andrews told reporters.\n\n“We have no choice but to reduce movement, reduce case numbers, otherwise this won’t be six weeks – it’ll be six months or longer – and we’ll have to continue to bury people.\n\n“We’ll have to continue to deal with an economy that’s essentially closed.”\n\nMr Andrews said if there was another way to solve the COVID-19 outbreak in his state then his government would take that option but they have had no alternative. \n\n“There is not the luxury of being able to choose an effective health strategy at the moment and one that would see economic growth,” he said.\n\n“We will not see these numbers reduce sufficient for us to open back up again unless we take these heartbreaking, difficult but completely necessary decisions.”\n\nPrime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday said Victoria’s combined stage three and four restrictions were expected to cost Australia’s GDP up to $12 billion through the September quarter.\n\n“That’s not a number that I’ve seen before,” Mr Andrews said.\n\nImage: Getty DanielAndrewsMP You can’t win or eradicate the virus - have to live with it and manage risks. Can’t all live off handouts from other people’s taxes DanielAndrewsMP Gas Lighting the public once again.
