The first day of campaigning ahead of the United Kingdom general election has been marked by chaos inside the Conservative Party and doubts about Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Rwanda policy, as politicians on all sides make their case to the British public.

The UK has had its first day of election campaigning after Rishi Sunak called a general election on Thursday, with the Conservative leader now in a race to make up ground on Labour ahead of the vote. The first day of campaigning ahead of the United Kingdom general election has been marked by chaos inside the Conservative Party and doubts about Prime Minister Rishi Sunak 's Rwanda policy, as politicians on all sides make their case to the British public.

Observers have given Mr Sunak's government almost no chance of re-election, arguing it would be a"major miracle" if the Prime Minister was able to overcome polling which puts his party as many as 21 points behind the Labour opposition. Picture: Henry Nicholls/WPA Pool/Getty Images) Mr Sunak also talked up his record on the economy, having used promising inflation and GDP figures as a springboard for calling the election, although he acknowledged more work needed to be done to pull the nation out of its slump.

British taxpayers have already paid more than $596 million for the plan, which has also been subject to multiple legal challenges, and it was widely expected Mr Sunak would push for at least one flight to depart before the election to demonstrate progress on the issue. Minor party the Liberal Democrats also called out the revelation, labelling it an"utter humiliation and admission of defeat," for the Prime Minister and further proof the plan had been an"immoral and expensive disaster from day one."

However, the controversy surrounding the policy, which was deemed illegal by the UK Supreme Court, may prove difficult for the Tories to overcome given existing electoral hostility toward the government.
