‘Consequences of blinking’: Cash warns about taking softer line on Biloela family

A Tamil asylum-seeker family that was living in the Queensland town of Biloela has had no discussions about a potential relocation to New Zealand or the United States as a cabinet minister warned of the “consequences of blinking” on border security.

“The Australian community is not saying it’s OK to send this family to New Zealand or the US, they’re actually saying they should stay here,” she said. Attorney-General Michaelia Cash said the parents “had the children in Australia knowing the rules” and the government’s “very, very tough stance” on asylum seekers who arrived by boat.

“We are exploring alternatives, but I believe, personally, it is the right stance because of the consequences of blinking.”

If as karenandrewsmp has stated this family must be used as an example, how long must the punishment go on? No judicial penalty would have given more than the time they have already spent in detention. And the children would NEVER have been detained. How long?

Can’t you just see what an enticement this family’s experience would be! I’m sure the whole world would be wanting to emulate it. Almost everything government members say suggests they don’t mind sounding silly - unless they don’t know what’s silly.

Why would Aus Gov’t give offer to settle in US or NZ?!? They don’t have ability to guarantee that. The US settled thousands of Manus ppl denied by Aus. They can take everyone Aus gives the boot. Plenty of other ppl trying to settle in US why would they get the chance over them?
