Australia is sending a message to China that it will never be worthwhile to try and change the status quo by force, according to former foreign minister Alexander Downer.

Australia is sending a message to China that it will never be worthwhile to try and change the status quo by force according to former foreign minister Alexander Downer. The defence minister and the prime minister on Wednesday announced $270 billion in defence spending over the next ten years including a significant investment in long-range missile technology.

Mr Downer said Australia needs to ensure there is a proper balance of power in the region. “As China emerges from poverty to becoming a rich and powerful country, it wants to dominate the Indo-Pacific region increasingly,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny. The former Howard government minister said Australia needs to be “blunt with China” and be abundantly clear it will not succeed in any attempt to gain more influence.

This is bullshit

AlexanderDowner You just have to pray that they don't do to you and your family what your family did to first nations families

I reckon Mr Pyne may have helped!

Lol. You can shoot them all day and they will keep coming. Wake up

Downer? Clintons coffee boy? Bahahaha

Excellently move ScottMorrisonMP China is the new fascist power. Need to prepare for self defense against them CCPVirus

Hilarious bollocks. The 'status quo'? Once upon a time it was 'freedom', or 'democracy', or 'our land'. But the best the copy boys could muster was status quo.... Worth fightin' for...

These politicians aren’t very bright China doesn’t have to use force , it’s far cheaper for them to buy assets they want , they already own a lot of Australia

BREAKING: HRH Alexander Downer triggers China’s retreat from its South China Sea claims. No guns were fired.

aussie needs to fight for a cause...but what cause is this?

Learned a good lesson the way they beat to dead Indian soldiers. Bat eaters are crazy creatures. Beef up or beaten faster

why would they need force, they just buy politicians

So what’s nation-builder Downer going to do? Bug the president’s office so he can get a better deal on Xmas bon bons!

Oh my god please shut up

Lord Fishnet Stockings will embolden our enemies to attack forthwith!

😅😂🤣🤪

Bastille...!?

China - don’t listen to Downer, no one else does

The communists have not won a decisive battle since 1949. They invade by stealth then Han Chinese move in. They breed out the local population. How did we get to this point in time? With politicians that can’t say “no.” We can’t go to China and freely buy property.

Can’t we just ban TikTok instead?

So rather than spending money on health (ongoing worldwide pandemic) or education or even the economy trying to recover from CoVid19 they wanna try spend on military hoping CCP will take them serious ... Yeah can't see anything wrong with that 🤦🏾 auspol

Oh great. We're trusting Alexander 'George Papadopolous' Downer? Spare me. Downer is a shill for China.

Is Alexander Downer going to blame Russia for black face cancelling too. Like Alyssa Milano.

Great idea. A war led recovery with our largest trading partner.

Victoria ‘completely stuffed up’ Australia’s COVID-19 recovery: Bolt | Sky News AustraliaThe Victorian government is now wondering how to combat the coronavirus pandemic and whether it will revert back to devastating lockdown measures that “smashed the economy” says Sky News host Andrew Bolt. \n \nVictoria has recorded an uptick in COVID-19 infections, with 75 cases being recorded on Monday alone. \n \n“Victoria has completely stuffed up the whole country's recovery from the coronavirus panic,” Mr Bolt said. \n \n“Totally mismanaged its system of quarantining people who are sick”. \n \n“And Victoria now, which had the toughest virus laws in the country, is now wondering what now”. \n \nMr Bolt said the public are over the suggestion of going back into a government imposed lockdown while businesses and the economy continue to be impacted. \n \n“People have had it hiding in their homes”. \n \nImage: Getty \n \n Renowned epidemiologist Professor Andrew Bolt.... ahh who am I kidding. Virgin Australia shareholders unlikely to be paid | Sky News AustraliaVirgin Australia’s administrators, Deloitte, has sent out a press release saying shareholders of the airline should not expect to get any money back. \n\nThe announcement did not come as a surprise to many, as shareholders are typically the last to get paid out when a company goes into administration. \n\nThe total value of Virgin Australia’s shares is about $725 million valued at 8.6 cents each.\n\nThere are minimal retail investors as the airline is 90 per cent foreign owned, so big corporations are the major losers of Deloitte’s announcement.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n Meanwhile the LNP govt gives a leg up to foreign-owned REX whose chairman just happens to be Mr John Sharp former federal National Party MP and Minister for Transport in the Howard government. Airlines globally are going under but REX announces expansion after receiving *grants*. I would be more interested in how much unsecured creditors will be repaid, ie cents in the dollar. I doubt the big shareholders expected to get anything out of the administration Take that.

Australia's unemployed knocking back work in favour of JobSeeker | Sky News AustraliaAustralian employers are struggling to find applicants despite the high unemployment rate, according to fresh data released today. \n\nEmployment Minister Michaelia Cash said more than half of all businesses who reported recruitment difficulties said one of the main reasons was a lack of applicants. \n\nWith unemployment sitting above seven per cent, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the JobSeeker payments were possibly discouraging people from entering the workforce. \n\n“We are getting a lot of anecdotal feedback from small businesses and large businesses where some of them are finding it hard to get people to come and take shifts because they’re on these higher levels of payment,” he said. \n\n“So we’ve just got to make sure that we continue to provide what is a reasonable level of support in the middle of the worst recession we’ve had since the Great Depression. \n\n“But at the same time, we can’t let the help get in the way.” \n\nJobSeeker was raised from $275 per week to $555 to help workers affected by the coronavirus downturn. \n\nThe Opposition is ramping up calls for a permanent increase to the welfare payments, arguing returning the rate to $40 a day would be cruel. \n\nThe Coalition ruled out a permanent increase but flagged more targeted support when the scheme was phased out in September. \n\nImage: Getty All we have is 'anecdotal evidence' from someone with a huge conflict of interest, Michaelia Cash. BULLSHIT Time to review the jobkeeper applications and kick back to work the lousy idiots that want to live in a benefit and go around in useless protests.

Coronavirus is a ‘tale of two countries’ Victoria and the rest of Australia | Sky News AustraliaThe longer the coronavirus crisis lasts the more it seems Australia is a “tale of two countries” according to Sky News host Peta Credlin.\n\nVictorians will be excluded from a plan to reopen Queensland’s borders while Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced the state will revert back to stage three restrictions.\n\nMeanwhile, South Australia has scrapped plans to reopen its hard border with Victoria which was previously slated to occur on July 20.\n\n“There’s Victoria, which is again recording infections at the level of late March,” Ms Credlin said.\n\n“And there’s the rest of Australia where, as long as you don't want to go overseas, life has returned to something like normal.”\n\nImage: News Corp Australia Waiting for the racism claims to start flooding in for the postcodes locked down. And some of the push back is the federal government hasn’t provided enough health information in a multitude of languages. 1) it’s Victoria so it’s the DHHS’s responsibility and 2) multiculturalism You'd think that Credlin would have learned to STFU. Sky News needs to get behind Victoria like the rest of Australia.
