Liberal Senator James Paterson says UNESCO "hasn't visited the Great Barrier Reef since 2012" and it was taken off the "in danger list in 2015", but all of a sudden, under a Chair from China, the warning is likely to be put back on. "Of the 21 members of the UNESCO council, 14 of them are Belt & Road agreement participants and the 15th is China as Chair," he said.
“We won’t be taking a lecture from the Chinese government on our barrier reef,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin. The senator also pointed to China’s disastrous climate record declaring Australia “won’t be taking a lecture from them on climate change either”. “If they believe climate change is causing harm to the Great Barrier Reef, well then they need to look pretty close to home as the world’s largest emitter," Mr Paterson said.
