ANALYSIS: China and Australia — who really holds the power?

An unamused Beijing clearly is muscling up and would prefer Canberra to shut up. And a clutch of nervous billionaires are desperately urging a smoothing of waters.Iron ore is our biggest export earner, now on track to pull in $100 billion a year. The vast bulk of that goes to China.

That makes it cheaper and, when it comes to steel making, far less polluting; an important factor in a country where much of the population is choking. Both options would come at enormous cost, something Beijing is desperate to avoid, and for good reason.

King XI

Well it’s not us

33% of our total trade? That's insane.

The Chinese Dragon cannot be appeased, placated, or tamed. We need St. George.!.

Aus holds the power whilst the Liberal Party hold government but the balance of power will move back to China as it was when the Labor Party return to office

I'm certainly not a CPP supporter but use some common sense. 1) everyone knows there were screw ups in containing covid. in China and elsewhere. so why keep attacking China? lets find solutions and a vaccine 2) when you want to pick a fight then be prepared to take some blows.

We don't want to hold any power! We just want to trade amicably, for the benefit of us & them!

Make Australia Abate Again! Find other trading partners.

Trans-era cry is a value of democracies. China is simply not transparent.

China is nothing in front of us..they are like a garbage!

Excellent writing

Australia not facking china

Chijna!!

Well...a LOT of our infrastructure (including seaports & airports) are owned by China so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t really want to find out the true answer to that question anytime soon.

Anyone else noticed the massive increase in stupid antagonistic replies from Chinabot accounts lately? Before you get in discussion with them, check the Bio, few followers, account since March April 2020 is common. Tweets and replies tab has a common theme. Defending China only😕

China is a becoming a superpower obviously they hold the power. We should not fall in The US trap. We should remain neutral and that is in our interest.

🤣🤣🤣your kidding right? Does this question need to be asked. Over 2 billion Chinese....Australia, 24 million. We are dwarfed by China. And if we're not careful, they might change their tune all together about Australia.

China is only powerful due to population poorly run corrupt and world is turning away Xi botched his rule and is taking china backwards

Snap does 😉

Me

USA really holds the power. This very topic is USA propaganda spred by our own susposed independent news in ABC. We continually insult China on USA's behalf this is why they retaliate. Heard USA replaced our barley exports into China with their own. Pompeo is the evil one.

China clearly holds the power due to the greed (“almighty dollar”) of many of the business people in Australia and other western countries. The CCP has taken advantage of the week-kneed Australian politicians; look at the assets China owns in our country.

Start hitting back, cancel the lease on Darwin port, ban Chinese ownership in Australia

Come on Australia don't let China dictate to us.

I thought this was an informative and fairly balanced piece of journalism. It finishes with, “ In this period of reflection, perhaps it's time we considered our future.” Absolutely we should. We must take action to stop the over-reliance and buy back our land/independence.

Australia benefits from China, BUT Morrison administration always against China, no one can tolerates such mean behavior.

The countries who supply them with food, I'm old enough to remember China's devastating famines, many thousand of Chinese died, the world fed them then, they obviously were not grateful, now we have this arrogance, we have allowed them to become powerful through trade.

What a naive artical. You can try who really hold the power. The economy in China right now is better than ever before. You can also check China’s foreign exchange surplus compared its debt. No point to have bad relationship with China. Mutual respect please.

China

LNP gave that power to China when they Endorsed Glad into their party for $1million Donation with No Questions Asked

Who at the abc write these stupid headlines?

BoycottChina BoycottChineseProducts

The power is held by America because without 380 Million people to sell their plastic dog shit to they are nothing!

China has the money, we have the resources... We dont need their money or business but they need our recourses... Let's smoke the dogs out

If you gotta ask, you're probably the .

Lol, China of course. And better China than the US

Most of today's elite scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs had a childhood in absolute poverty and very poor education conditions. But they still can compete on world stage. The next generation Chinese have much better education and all families invest heavily on it.

Look at education. Most of today's China's scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs are children of illiterate or half-illiterate peasants. 30 years ago, each year China had only 300k college graduates, today 9 million, and over 2/3 of them study STEM.

Some people have a naive assumption: China can't get more powerful if ruled by CCP, it is fragile and will demise in turmoil. That's not impossible, but improbable. The most likely outcome is: whether China is ruled by CCP or not, it will become a superpower.

China

Stop putting anything in Australia.. you not our gornverment Xi jinping you not a king.. the Lord is very powerful better than you Mr Xi jinping. So don't treat us like a puppet.. you understand..

The simple ball-bearing. It’s the cornerstone of every machine,, there is no machine on the planet that doesn’t have them. To make them u need coking coal, iron ore and gas, all supplied by Aust. We stop supplying China and their unemployment goes to rebellion levels, let’s do it

Who holds the power? Who has the money? The Golden Rule: Whoever Has the Gold Makes the Rules.

Why call Australia an upstart? We are just a country trying to survive. In fact wasn’t it China only 50 years ago who were living in the dark ages? They are still referred to as a developing nation! 🙄 while Australia is a first world one. Who’s the upstart?

On China's media or social media, news about Australia quite rare. People do talk about a country frequently, that is America. But in Australia, media have a China bashing campaign almost everyday. Quite childish. Who holds power? You all know it is China but pretend to not.

Like all totalitarian authoritarian regimes China is all about smoke and mirror propaganda. While they could inflict economic difficulties on Australia in the short term, we still have the ability to reclaim manufacturing and maintain a strong economy without them.

communication is always the key

India.

Great Analysis! Definitely need to seek out new markets.

China own our asses.

China can not afford to lose us as their customer.

This question now seems to turn on confidence. Can any country be sure about its dealings with China et al about trade and other relationships when these are being trivialised at whim?

Many Australians have profited from free trade with China, as have many Chinese. It is of mutual benefit to both countries for the trade to continue, for reasons of mutual peace and strength. Trump’s contortionist rhetoric is in the interests of America only.

AMAZING...a real unbiased article backing Australia.... ha from the ABC. We have a secret hold over China....unemployment. Their unemployment, if it reaches 20% or more the CCP would face civil unrest on a masive scale, think hong kong..so withhold exports or find other markets

Not the dumb racist c***s in Australia

Is that a rhetorical question?

Cha-na. Ask that corrupted MP Gladys Liu

Why ask? Oz shifted from Britain to US 70 years ago. did people ask: US or oz really holds the power? Look forward or you will loose.

Comrade Andrews? 😂

Australia. Xi stashed under his Brother in Australia. An explosion detrimental to Xi’s hold onto power. If Xi lost, still Australia, cause new power need solidified grip and worldwide not trusting trading w 🇨🇳. Financial woes in 🇨🇳 dragging China’s Regime fall. Wait & see.

China is a joke

Chyna

China has got d choke hold They r big bully so we should shut our mouth The cost to be Trump's pet poodle

Australia, UK, Canada rebuke China over Hong Kong interventionThe three countries warned China's planned laws forbidding treason, secession, sedition, and subversion against the Central People's Government in Beijing would 'clearly undermine' Hong Kong's autonomy and its citizens' civil liberties. Do you understand now to whom ComradeDan is selling Victoria? I'm pretty sure we have laws forbidding treason, secession, sedition, and subversion... Its hard for some to accept, but HK is part of China. Rioting and vandalism in the name of 'democracy' (which was non existant under British colonial rule) is no longer allowed. Fair enough Thank you Australia.

China is losing its patience with Australia, and that could spell bad news for the export marketNow Australia has firmly announced its opposition to China's new legal framework for Hong Kong, exporters are nervous about how new Chinese tariffs and regulations might affect Australian trade, Stephen Dziedzic writes. time to find new export markets time to find new import markets Commie China burns through its patience like it burned through its patients. USA needs to stand arm in arm with Australia. They would do it for us. And sure would be nice if the rest of the world jumps in and we all support each other to soften any retaliation from that Red Dragon.
