'Children have died': Britain to probe Australia's infected blood scandal | carriefellner

A major public inquiry in Britain will examine Australia's involvement in an international health scandal in which victims were historically infected by blood contaminated with deadly hepatitis C and HIV.can reveal that leading Australian infected blood campaigner Charles MacKenzie will today be announced as a core participant in the long-running UK inquiry and is due to give evidence later this year.

He said he was sick of "burying mates" and watching others suffer debilitating symptoms of Hepatitis C, a major cause of liver disease and cancer. Many of the victims were infected through contaminated blood transfusions, including a baby from Melbourne that acquired HIV.Credit:An estimated 1750 were haemophiliacs – a condition which hampers clotting of the blood – treated with contaminated blood products manufactured by Commonwealth Serum Laboratories before it was privatised by the federal government.

It is examining thousands of documents, including those that relate to Australia's response to the disaster, and will seek evidence from Mr MacKenzie later this year. "Thousands of Australian victims desperately need the same sort of inquiry and support that is offered to victims of the exact same scandal in the UK," he said.

Witness Thomas Griffiths told the UK inquiry that many years of his life were ruined worrying about his life expectancy after he developed hepatitis C, until he later received a liver transplant.

Australia bottom of league table on manufacturing self-sufficiencyAn Australia Institute report found a third of OECD countries used more than they made; Australia was the least self-sufficient, while Ireland and Germany topped the list. Doesn’t surprise one bit. As well, other than food products which normally shd dominate the 70%, how many of the other locally produced good r really affordable to ordinary people? shalailah Australians in general (speaking from experience as a manufacturer) are shit at buying local. People/companies are often still paying more for imported lesser quality goods at a higher price. Why? They prefer the brand. FFS buyaustralian for decades our importers are happy outsourcing everything from China They turn out not to be friend but deadly enemy looking for opportunity to exploit in the way Euro colonialism in 19th century SOE buying farms n mines n the profit tax free
