Orica has been fined $1.2 million after two workers were exposed to potentially deadly cobalt dust over several years.Chemical giant Orica has been fined $1.2 million for cobalt dust releases that a court said exposed Newcastle workers to a risk of death or serious injury.
At a hearing in April this year, Orica pleaded guilty to failing to comply with its duty under the Work Health and Safety Act.He was moved to another role after cobalt dust exposure was blamed for his asthma. The court action also related to a second worker, Andrew Linstrom, who was a plant operator in the shed from 2017.The court was told that on December 6, 2019 Orica notified SafeWork NSW of an adverse health monitoring report and, a month later, one of its inspectors wrote a report on what they saw.
"Orica expresses our deepest regret and acknowledges that our conduct fell below what was acceptable," he said.
