People driving in Melbourne’s CBD during peak hours should be charged a fee to help reduce city traffic, the head of the state’s peak infrastructure body says.

Infrastructure Victoria found a more compact city would lead to 25 per cent more public transport use and 70 per cent less time spent in congested traffic across the state but inner Melbourne itself would experience more congestion

Infrastructure Victoria wants to see a congestion charge to tackle CBD traffic as the number of residents grows. In its report released on Friday, the agency estimated the state’s population would increase by 4.5 million people to more than 11 million people in the next 30 years, putting increasing pressure on Melbourne’s roads.

“If we’re going to get that level of congestion in the centre of Melbourne, there is sense in considering a price signal to people about whether they really need to drive their car in the middle of Melbourne in peak time,” Spear said. In London, the daily congestion charge is £15 . Transport for London has calculated that the scheme limited traffic in the inner city by 18 per cent during weekday hours that attract the fee and reduced congestion by 30 per cent.

“People are in such a rush, sometimes cars encroach on you as you are crossing, I’ve even had people beeping their horn at me for taking too long to cross the road.”
