Treasurer Dominic Perrottet says the NSW government’s determination to avoid lockdowns has helped propel the state out of a historic pandemic-induced recession | AlexSmithSMH Rabe9 LucyCormack

Mr Perrottet’s budget, delivered just seven months after his delayed COVID budget, shows the state’s deficit halved to $7.9 billion although will climb back to $8.6 billion in the next financial year.As the Bondi Junction COVID-19 cluster grew to 21 cases on Tuesday, Mr Perrottet said: “Our goal was to always lock down the virus, not lock down the state.”

Stronger than expected household spending and a booming housing market have also helped the rebound, although Mr Perrottet warns border closures are holding back NSW’s full recovery. Forecasts are also based on NSW remaining “largely free of restrictions”, with no likely return to capacity limits on weddings, restaurants, theatres or sporting events.
