The ACT Parliament has passed laws to legalise the possession and cultivation of cannabis for personal use

ACT Parliament has passed laws to legalise the possession and cultivation of cannabis for personal use.

He said opposition would support some of the government's amendments, but remained fundamentally opposed to the bill. Chief Police Officer for the ACT Ray Johnson said ACT Policing would work with the government "to address the implementation" of the legislation. But days later, the DPP said on further consideration it would not be appropriate to provide a view on the proposed legislation.Addressing how it would interact with Commonwealth law, ACT Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay told ACT Parliament where there was a state and territory law, Commonwealth law allowed police and the courts to apply the laws of the state or territory.

Chief Police Officer for the ACT Ray Johnson said the force would now consider the detail of the legislation.

ACT legalises marijuana for personal use | Sky News AustraliaACT Labor politician Michael Pettersson says he doesn’t believe there will be tension between territory and Commonwealth laws, after the Barr government legalised marijuana for personal use on Wednesday.\n\nUnder the private member's bill brought forward by Mr Pettersson, Canberrans over the age 18 will be allowed to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants.\n\nThe law is an Australian first.\n\nThe ACT opposition is against the bill, with shadow attorney-general Jeremy Hanson arguing the bill will lead to “perverse outcomes.”\n\nPossession and using cannabis will still be illegal under Commonwealth law, and Canberrans could still face federal prosecution.\n\nMr Pettersson told Sky News however he’d be “amazed” if prosecutors brought a charge against a marijuana-user in the ACT.\n\n“Prosecutors will not be bringing charges because, quite simply, there is a complete defence to the commonwealth drug charge,” he said. “There won’t be a territory offence and they’ll have a complete defence to the Commonwealth charge.” PetterssonMLA auspol We ALL know why?
