Canberra's casual teacher system is being overhauled with schools encouraged to establish their own 'in-built' relief staff.

The report found during term two of this year, an average of 339 classes were separated and 210 classes were combined each day, while there were 272 instances per week of college students having to shift to online learning. "In-built relief effectively is additional teachers. Schools already have a casual budget so that they can employ staff as they need them.

He said a sustainable workload management committee would be established to look at employing more learning assistants in schools to help teachers with administrative duties.Education Minister Yvette Berry says the ACT government is "absolutely committed" to building and retaining Canberra's teaching workforce.

Education Minister Yvette Berry said a five-year plan to attract and retain teachers would be established by next year, to recruit 250 to 300 teachers annually to meet growing demand.

This has been going on in regional tassie schools before I began teaching in 2009. I know, I was one of these in my first year before being given my 'own' class.

Reinstate those you segregated

Here’s a thought. How about making some of the thousands of teachers on 12 month contracts who have to scramble at the end of every year and go through the horrendously demoralising recruitment process permanent. Lack of job security is a huge reason for teacher attrition.

Teachers need some cigarettes! My old teacher was stressed out from teaching hed go smoke in his car after every class.

Like they had in the 80s?

Lol that's like saying there's a food shortage so we'll have food on standby just incase there's not enough food.
