The head of a taskforce into domestic and family violence has recommended an independent examination into the way police responded to concerns raised by mother of three Kelly Wilkinson before her death.

Ms Wilkinson’s family claimed they took Kelly, 27, to police “almost every day” to raise concerns about her ex-husband Brian Earl Johnston, 34, in the weeks before her death.

Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd said police took women’s domestic violence complaints very seriously. Picture: Brad FleetAssistant Commissioner Brian Codd said last week it was deemed Mr Johnston’s alleged actions did not breach the conditions of a court order. It will examine whether coercive control should be a specific offence of domestic violence while reporting on the experiences of women across the criminal justice system.

“I’m told, as I walked in today, that we’ve already had a number of submissions made, so there obviously is a need and an appetite for this taskforce.”
