.AlexSmithSMH: Labor's signature election issue had lost its momentum until Michael Daley fronted Alan Jones nswvotes

After a strong start over the quiet Sydney summer, Michael Daley's signature election issue had lost its momentum.he picked up where his precedessor Luke Foley left off and made Sydney stadiums the defining theme of his party's campaign.Labor had a strong message - schools and hospitals before stadiums - while the Coalition fumbled trying to tell its story of strong economic management.

But as Daley stood at the gates of Allianz Stadium day after day insisting that the election was a referendum on stadiums, the heat was dissipating from the issue.Labor then pinned its hopes on a court battle to halt the demolition of the Moore Park stadium to spark renewed interest. There was only a small flurry of interest. As an uneventful election campaign rumbled on, Daley needed to land a new blow, which he chose to deliver face-to-face in a live radio interview with Alan Jones.

In a premeditated strike, Daley sat in the studio with the shock jock and told Jones that he and the other trustees on the powerful SCG Trust would be sacked if he becomes premier.Daley knew what he was doing. It was not a "hot-headed decision" as Gladys Berejiklian claimed, but rather a calculated move to reignite Labor's best line of attack.

By taking on Jones, who champions himself as someone who can make or break politicians, Daley could paint himself as someone not afraid to stand up to Jones.A stark contrast to many Liberal leaders, including Berejiklian, who last year failed to condemn the broadcasterJones blasted Herron on Sydney radio station 2GB when she resisted his and the racing industry’s demands that the Opera House sails be used to advertise a horse race.

But with almost three weeks to go, and a government desperate to hang on, Daley will need more of the same if he is to maintain the momentum until election day.
