As climate change brings more protracted and severe bushfire seasons, protecting vulnerable people from smoke exposure will be a major challenge for health authorities.

Almost two years after a raging fire threatened Rebekah Webb's home on the New South Wales south coast, her front deck still bears the scars of the black ash that rained down on her home. The EPA in the US is teaching local governments and the public how to create spaces with clean air"The smoke in the air — you could taste it, you could feel it," she said.

The wind changed and her home was spared from the disastrous 2020 bushfire season, but the tidal wave of smoke that rolled into town for days and weeks afterwards wreaked its own kind of havoc. As stumps in burnt-out tracts of land started to smoulder and send more smoke into the atmosphere it meant there was no escape from the fumes, inside or outside their homes. In the end, the smoke was so bad the New South Wales government paid for homes in the area to be steam cleaned.Smoke triggers serious asthmaAs the fire activity increased in New South Wales in December 2019, Ms Webb was increasing her dosage of asthma medication.

In the ambulance on her way to a third hospital in Wollongong, Ms Webb realised just how serious things had become."I actually felt like this could be it."
