Mr Dutton said he had received advice as defence minister before last year's election that the British shipyard where the nuclear submarines are built had no extra capacity. Mr Fell acknowledged that the UK's nuclear submarine program was stretched with a number of submarines already on the production line, but said there were plans in place to expand if necessary.

"We shouldn't take our eyes off the fact that this is going to be a massive challenge for Australia to step up and build those skills and build that manufacturing base itself.

The United States is the highest quality military ally and their bases are much closer to Australia and 'potential' threats. It benefits Australia much more to divert this money to them rather than France who will only watch as China sacks our country as they do Ukraine.

Nuclear subs are designed not as defence weapons but to sit on China doorstep and threaten them trying to make them scared. As told to me by a Naval Officer at an Engineer's Seminar.
